Conference Object Structure and Fragment in Architectural Practice(ISPEC Publishing House, 2021) Atabek Çelikli, İlkiz; Acar, Sibel; Çağlar, NurThis paper is a part of the thesis titled “Structure and Fragment in Architectural Practice”, which is studied at the Department of Architecture at TOBB ETU. The thesis argues that the visual culture environment has become dominant, and this has affected the practice of architecture. In addition, it states that during the production of images, the linear process that starts with an idea and ends with a product disappears. Therefore, the fragments of the product become important rather than the final product. Accordingly, the thesis explores alternative ways of understanding the processes and products of architectural practice in the context of fragment and structure relationship. Every image is both a structure and a fragment. While fragments create various structures by associating with other fragments, these structures are divided into various fragments endlessly. The relationship between the fragment and the structure, which this article’s focal point, focuses on the fragment and the intellectual outputs of the structure, that is constantly reconstructing itself. Looking from the framework of the structure and fragment relations offers a new perspective to understand and interpret today's architectural practice with its processes, objects, and images. Accordingly, in this article, in addition to the theoretical framework, the practices of two architects, Şevki Pekin and Mehmet Konuralp, who were awarded the Mimar Sinan Grand Award, are interpreted the discussion of the fragment-structure communication potentials. Materials such as photographs, interviews, videos, and visual maps were used for discussion. Fragment-structure maps of the professional practices of these two architects were produced and the QR Codes of these maps are presented in this paper.Book Part Structure and Fragment in Architectural Practice(Caleidoscopio, 2022) Atabek Çelikli, İlkiz; Acar, Sibel; Çağlar, NurSince the last decades of the previous century, image production has increased more rapidly than in any other history phase. The visual culture environment has become dominant and affected architectural practices. The linear process that begins with an idea and ends with an end-product has disappeared. This study explores an al- ternative way of looking at the architectural practice, understanding its processes and products. By defining two concepts, “fragment” and “structure,” and question- ing their relationship as a pair, this study argues that; Each image is both a struc- ture and a fragment. Fragments establish various structures by associating with oth- er fragments while the structures break down into various fragments that go forever. Attention and responsiveness to each other, the communication of the fragment and the structure becomes a richer exchange, more cooperative, more dialogic. Thus, they provide a broader perspective to comprehend and interpret the present day’s architec- tural practice through its objects and images. The relationship between the fragment and the structure that this essay focuses on is not a kind of dialog in which parties preserve themselves while they communicate, nor the fragment and structure have a part-whole relationship. Instead, this study focuses on the intellectual outputs of structure and fragment that construct and reconstruct themselves in a dialogic rela- tionship within this context.
